Roof area and square footage
Trace individual roof facets and calculate their pitch-adjusted surface areas. Work with flat or pitched roofs, multiple buildings, and roof layers in the same measurement.

Examples are for exploring the tools. Their measurements and roof heights are sample inputs, not verified site surveys. Roof tracing works best on a desktop or laptop.
Click Create new Measurement, then search for a property and capture satellite imagery or upload a top-down roof photo. For uploaded images, set the scale against a distance you know.
Outline each roof facet. Label eaves, ridges, hips, valleys, rakes, and flashing, then assign the pitch for each facet to calculate its sloped area.
Check the drawing and 3D preview, finish any missing inputs, then generate and download your PDF report.
Use the browser-based drawing tools to document a roof for an estimate, compare roof sections, or understand a project before discussing it with a roofing contractor.
Trace individual roof facets and calculate their pitch-adjusted surface areas. Work with flat or pitched roofs, multiple buildings, and roof layers in the same measurement.
Classify roof edges to organize their lengths in your report. Identify eaves at the lower roof boundary, ridges at the top, hips at outward intersections, and valleys where slopes meet inward.
Inspect how roof facets and layers fit together. Rotate the model, zoom in, and review pitch inputs. Try the completed examples before creating your own roof drawing.
Finish a drawing and export roof diagrams, facet pitches, areas, and classified edge lengths. Create a free account to save the measurement and add your company branding.
An overhead image shows the horizontal footprint of a roof. A sloped facet has more surface area than its footprint. A 6/12 pitch rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run, giving an area multiplier of about 1.118.
For example, a facet with a 1,000 sq ft horizontal footprint and a 6/12 pitch has roughly 1,118 sq ft of roof surface. For roofs with different pitches, calculate each facet separately and add the areas.
A roofing square is 100 square feet of roof area. Divide your measured square footage by 100 to convert it into squares. A 2,500 sq ft roof is 25 squares before waste.
Measured area is the starting point for a material estimate. Cuts, valleys, starter courses, ridge caps, and product coverage affect what you order. Verify the scale, pitch, and important dimensions before using a report for purchasing.
Use the same drawing and reporting tools available in Vertex CRM. Measure multiple buildings and roof layers, inspect facets in 3D, and download your work as a PDF.
This is an interactive measurement tool: you trace the roof and supply its pitch. An overhead image alone does not establish pitch. Image resolution, scale, perspective, and your tracing affect the result. Check critical dimensions on site before ordering materials.
Yes. Trace each roof facet over a scaled overhead image and enter its pitch. The tool calculates pitch-adjusted roof area in square feet and combines the facets into a roof measurement. Your home’s floor area alone is not enough to determine its roof area.
One roofing square equals 100 square feet. Divide measured roof area by 100: a 2,500-square-foot roof is 25 roofing squares before any allowance for waste. Material quantities also depend on roof layout and product coverage.
Yes. Explore the live preview or open a completed example directly in the 3D viewer. Orbit, pan, zoom, and inspect roof facets, pitches, and layers without signing in. The preview reconstructs the roof from the drawing and pitch inputs; it is not a site survey.
No. An address helps you find satellite imagery. You still trace the roof, classify edges, and supply the roof pitch. Uploaded photos also need scale calibration using a known distance.
Yes. You can start a measurement, edit roof facets and edge types, assign pitches, preview the roof in 3D, and generate PDF roof reports without creating an account. Measurements made without an account are not saved; create a free account to keep them.
Select Create new Measurement to open the editor. Enter the property address, select the matching location in the satellite picker, and frame the roof. Capture the imagery, trace each roof facet, classify its edges, and enter the pitch. Satellite captures include a ground scale calculated from the map position and zoom.
Yes. Upload a clear overhead image and calibrate its scale using a known real-world distance. Perspective, lens distortion, image quality, tracing, and pitch inputs affect the measurements. Verify important dimensions on site before ordering materials.
Completed drawings produce a report with roof diagrams, pitch-adjusted areas, facet pitches, and classified edge lengths such as eaves, ridges, hips, valleys, and rakes. Manually entered quantities can be downloaded as a summary PDF. When every step is finished, select Generate PDF report in the editor.
Without an account, they are not saved anywhere, not even in your browser. Your measurement exists only while the editor is open, so download the PDF report before you close it. Create a free account to save measurements, reopen them on any device, and brand reports with your company details and logo. Address searches and satellite captures use the mapping provider.
You can browse the page and enter measurements manually on mobile. Roof tracing needs a desktop or laptop with a larger screen and a mouse or trackpad. The tool explains this when you open the drawing editor on a phone.
